Field Trip to George Eastman House!

On Saturday, April 26th the A-3 students took a trip to Rochester to visit the George Eastman house and Museum.

The George Eastman house was such a great experience for the students. We learned of George Eastman's contributions to the world of film cameras and the ease of capturing memories today. The most impressive information we learned was that Mr. Eastman was an avid hunter and enjoyed gardening. He kept maticulous records or what types of plants, trees and flowers he had and exactly where they were. This made it easy for the University of Rochester to restore the garden to its exact design.
George Eastman contributed millions of dollars to the University of Rochester as well as MIT in Massachusetts where both universities were able to establish their well known medical and engineering schools.
The museum offers a lot of great family tours and events. Check out their website for a list of upcoming events.

Cornell Cooperative Extension

Cornell Cooperative Extension, CCE, has been providing enrichment programs designed for 3rd-5th grade and 6th-8th grade.
Students in the 6th grade have been participating in a 4 -H life science enrichment provided by CCE of Steuben county. Their focus was the human body and what makes our heart rates increase, the heart rates of animals compared to their body size, what materials hold heat and how to keep our bodies healthy. The photos demonstrate students making their own granola bars utilizing proteins, wheat, carbohydrates and fruits to add flavors.

This was a great program. Currently, the 6th-8th graders are in a photography enrichment on Thursdays composed of learning the parts of a camera, understanding different angles, positions and types of photographs. Pictures will be posted soon of students in action and their projects!

Students in grades 3rd-5th are participating in an in-touch 4-H life science enrichment on Tuesdays. They are began with a science experiment determining which material could hold the most weight in pennies. They proposed hypothesis questions before beginning the experiment and tested it four times. The students had a blast with this one and they got to eat a marshmallow at the end!
Getting ready to test their hypothesis!

Exciting about getting their pasta to hold 32 pennies, the most in the whole group!

Retesting their hypothesis.

Science Field Trips

Some A-3 students have participated in fields in the last month to extend their learning experience in their enrichment programs.

The first trip was to the Corning Museum of Glass. The students were given a tour of the museum focusing on the history of glass, the design and use. We were then able to view a live glass blowing show and learned of the chemistry of glass, what Gaffer's do and the process of designing different pieces of dishware. As an incentive, the students were able to decorate a drinking glass to take home while learning of the stand blasting process. Here is the website if you'd like more information on family programs.
Students were taking a quiz on the chemistry of glass

A-3 students were decorating their drinking glass as part of the sand blasting activity.

A student was learning of reflection and refraction and how sound travels with glass

The second field trip was to the Rochester Museum and Science Center. This trip was a big hit with the students! There was so much history, nature expos and fun things for students to do. We will have to visit again next year! Check out their website here!

Students took part of a volcano and under water simulation ride. Once we found this, they didn't want to leave!

Students did a mock archaeological dig to find artifacts that were found in the region.

The next scheduled field trip is to The George Eastman House and Rock Ventures in Rochester on April 26th. There will be a post with pictures of the event!

Thanks for keeping up the A-3 program at Bradford :)
